What Your Original Self Actually Feels Like — Return to the Original Self Blog Series Week 3 of 4 by Janell Rae

What Your Original Self Actually Feels Like

March 20, 20267 min read

I've described the original self as the state you were in before the conditioning arrived. But I want to do something different today. I want to tell you what it actually feels like — from the inside — when someone reconnects with it.

Because here's what I've noticed after years of doing this work: when people first hear the concept of the original self, they place it somewhere far away. A distant version of themselves, lost to childhood. Something they'd need a long time and a lot of work to locate again.

And then we do the work. And what they discover surprises them almost every time.

It isn't far away at all. It's right here. It was right here the whole time — just underneath. Not buried, exactly. More like dimmed. The way a lamp is still a lamp even when someone has turned the brightness all the way down.

What we're doing in this work is not finding something that was lost. We're turning the light back up.

It Doesn't Feel Like Peace. It Feels Like Clarity.

The first thing I want to correct is a misconception I see constantly. People expect the return to the original self to feel like peace. Soft, quiet, still. A kind of spiritual ease.

Sometimes it does. But more often — especially in those first moments after a Core Shift — it feels like something sharper and more immediate than peace.

It feels like clarity.

Like a fog lifting that you didn't even fully realize was there. Like suddenly being able to see the room you've been standing in for years. Clients reach for words like: clean. Open. Like I can think straight for the first time. Like the static stopped.

That static — that low, continuous hum of not-quite-right, not-quite-enough — is what the borrowed voice sounds like when it runs in the background of everything. Most people have lived with it for so long they've stopped hearing it as noise. It just became the sound of being themselves.

When it clears, the quiet isn't empty. It's spacious. And in that space, something else becomes audible — a quality of inner knowing that was always present but couldn't be heard above the static.

Client testimonials on what it feels like to return to the original self — Energy Intelligence Method™ by Janell Rae

The Felt Difference Between Borrowed and Original

One of the most useful things I can offer you is a way to begin distinguishing between the two in your own experience — not conceptually, but in the body, in the moment.

The borrowed voice has a particular texture. Once you start recognizing it, it becomes harder to mistake for your own inner knowing.

The Borrowed Voice vs. The Original Self — a comparison of how each feels from the inside, Energy Intelligence Method™ by Janell Rae

This is the distinction that changes everything in my work with clients: the original self doesn't fight for airtime. It doesn't argue. It doesn't need you to believe it. It just waits — with a kind of patient, unhurried steadiness — for you to be quiet enough to hear it.

The borrowed voice, by contrast, is loud precisely because it's afraid. It overcompensates for its own uncertainty by insisting. It needs you to keep listening to it. It doesn't do well with silence.

Your original self doesn't announce itself. It surfaces. Quietly, steadily, in the spaces between the noise — like water finding its level when something stops pushing against it.

Three Signals That Your Original Self Is Present

In my practice, I've noticed that the return to the original self tends to announce itself through three recognizable experiences. You may have felt glimpses of these already — moments where something shifted and you thought this is what I actually am— without having language for what was happening.

Decisions become easier — not because you stopped caring, but because you can feel what's true

One of the hallmarks of the borrowed voice is decision paralysis. When the imprint is running, every choice carries the weight of the fear behind it — the fear of getting it wrong, of being too much or not enough, of disappointing someone or exposing yourself. When the original self is present, this weight lifts. You don't stop caring about the outcome. But you can feel which direction is actually yours, and that knowing comes from somewhere deeper and quieter than the calculating mind.

Your body stops bracing

Most people who carry identity-level imprints have been living in a state of subtle physical bracing for years — a slight tightening in the chest, a chronic readiness to defend or retreat, a held quality in the breath and the jaw and the shoulders. When the original self surfaces, the body softens. Not in a collapsed way. In a rooted way. The shoulders drop not because you're giving up but because there's nothing left to defend against. You are simply, actually, here— present in your own body in a way that may feel unfamiliar and profoundly right at the same time.

Your voice changes

This one surprises people every time. I don't mean the voice you speak with changes in some dramatic way. I mean the quality of what comes out when you speak from the original self is different — steadier, more direct, less apologetic in its tone even when the words themselves are gentle. Clients describe it as "my voice finally matching what I actually mean." Women who have spent years softening everything they say, hedging every statement, ending sentences as questions — find that when the imprint releases, a different quality of speaking emerges. One that doesn't require them to make themselves smaller to be heard.

You've Already Had Glimpses

Here's what I want you to know: you haven't been waiting for something you've never experienced. You've felt it before. Probably more recently than you think.

It was there in a moment when you said exactly what you meant and it landed exactly right and you felt — for one clear second — completely yourself.

It was there in a flow state, when you were so absorbed in something you loved that the inner critic simply couldn't get a word in.

It was there in the company of certain people — the rare ones who somehow make you larger rather than smaller just by being in the room with you.

It was there in a moment of genuine laughter, or grief, or wonder — when you were too present to perform.

Those weren't accidents. They weren't you being different. They were you being more you— the borrowed fear temporarily out of the way, the original self briefly unobscured.

That is the state we're returning to. Not permanently altered. Not a different person. Just —more. More present, more clear, more coherent, more recognizably and unmistakably yourself.

A Practice for This Week

Learning to Recognize Your Own Signal

This week, I'd like you to try one thing. When you feel the pull of self-doubt — when the voice rises and says not now, not you, not yet— instead of engaging with the content of what it's saying, get curious about its texture.

Where is it in your body? What does it actually feel like — the weight of it, the shape of it, the quality of the sensation? Is it tight or heavy or buzzing or hollow?

And then ask: Does this feel like me? Or does it feel like something I'm carrying?

You don't have to answer the question definitively. You don't have to know where it came from or what to do about it. Just practice noticing the difference between the feeling of the imprint and the feeling of you.

That noticing — that microscopic moment of distinction — is where the return begins.

This is not a therapeutic exercise and is not intended to replace professional support. It is an invitation to curiosity — a first step in the direction of what the Energy Intelligence Method™ calls Awareness, the opening stage of the Healing Cycle.
