It's Not Your Masculine Energy That Blocks Healing — It's the Wounded Version of It

Understanding the four faces of energetic polarity, and which one is actually running your healing sessions.

By Janell Rae | Energy Intelligence Method™

I want to clear something up that I see misunderstood a lot in the healing world — including in conversations I've been part of for years.

There's a tendency to frame masculine energy as the obstacle to healing and feminine energy as the solution. Push the masculine aside, lean into the feminine, and you'll be open and ready to receive. The message lands neatly and it's not without some truth — but it's missing something important.

Because here's what I know from doing this work: it's not your masculine energy that blocks healing. It's the wounded version of it. And the same is true for feminine energy — a wounded feminine is just as capable of closing you off as anything else.

The real picture is more nuanced than masculine versus feminine. It's about high and low expressions of both — and which combination is actually operating in you when you step into a healing space.

Think About a Tree

When I work with clients on understanding this, I often come back to a tree.

The masculine energy of a tree is its fiber — the dense, organized structure that holds the form, gives it shape, allows it to stand. Without that structure, nothing else functions. The tree collapses.

The feminine energy is the sap — the flowing, nourishing life force that moves up from the roots and down from the leaves, carrying what the tree needs to survive and grow.

Here's the key: the sap can only flow because the fiber gives it a channel. The structure isn't the enemy of the flow. The structure is what makes flow possible.

This is what high masculine and high feminine look like working together. Not in opposition. In collaboration.

"The fiber doesn't block the sap. It gives the sap somewhere to go. High masculine energy is what makes healing feel safe enough to actually land."

The Four Expressions — Which One Are You In?

In the Energy Intelligence Method™, I work with four distinct expressions of polarity. Understanding which one is active in you during a healing session changes everything about what's needed.

High Masculine + High Feminine

Structure enabling flow — the coherent healing state

This is the state we're aiming for. High masculine provides the grounded container — the sense of safety and structure that allows you to stay present during deep work. High feminine provides the openness and receptivity to actually receive what's moving through.

When both are operating in their high expression, you feel grounded and open at the same time. Stable, but not braced. Present, but not guarded. This is the state where profound healing becomes possible.

Low Masculine + High Feminine

Uncontained openness — too much flow, not enough structure

This one surprises people. You'd think high feminine would always be a good thing — and the receptivity piece is beautiful. But without a grounded masculine container, that openness can tip into overwhelm.

This can look like: feeling flooded after sessions, taking on other people's energy without boundaries, processing that never seems to complete, or sensitivity that feels like it has no walls. The water is flowing — but the channel is so loose that it can't be directed anywhere useful.

The healing here isn't about becoming less open. It's about building the structure that gives your openness somewhere to land.

High Masculine + Low Feminine

Rigid control — structure without flow

This is what most people picture when they think of masculine energy blocking healing. And it can show up that way — but the word "high" here is a bit of a misnomer, because what we're actually seeing is masculine energy in its structure without any of its groundedness.

It looks like: rigidity where discernment should be, evaluation where curiosity should be, and a demand for proof before the system will allow anything to move. The fiber is there, but it's so dense that nothing can pass through.

The session question becomes: is this control, or is this safety? Because the structure of high masculine is genuinely safety-producing. The rigidity of wounded masculine is fear in disguise.

Low Masculine + Low Feminine

Withdrawal and shutdown — both systems closed

This is the state that often looks the most like "not trying" — but is actually the one that requires the most gentleness. When both masculine and feminine are in their wounded expressions simultaneously, the system shuts down. There's no structure to hold a container and no openness to receive anything into it.

This often presents as numbness, disconnection, the sense of going through the motions of healing without anything actually landing. It's not apathy. It's protection — the deepest kind.

Working here means going slower than you think you need to. Rebuilding safety before anything else.

"Both wounded states will stop the flow of healing. But they look completely different in the body — and they need completely different things."

The One That Gets Missed Most Often

Of the four, the one I find most underrecognized — and most important to understand — is the wounded feminine.

In a lot of healing spaces, the conversation centers on softening the masculine, opening up, receiving more. And for some people, that's exactly right.

But for others — often people who've had their openness hurt, their trust violated, or their receiving met with harm — the feminine energy has contracted as a form of protection. It isn't blocking through force or evaluation. It's blocking through withdrawal. Through numbness. Through a quiet but powerful refusal to extend its hands.

And because this doesn't look like resistance, it can get misread as not trying hard enough, not wanting it badly enough, or being somehow unreachable. None of that is true.

When the feminine has been wounded, healing begins not with deeper work but with something simpler: the slow, careful restoration of the sense that it is safe to receive. That not everything that was offered in the past came with a cost. That this time, it can be different.

A reflection to try on:

When you think about the four states above — which one feels most familiar to you in a healing context? Not which one you'd like to be in, but which one actually shows up. There's no right or wrong answer. The noticing is the beginning of the shift.

You Have Both. The Question Is Which Is Leading.

Here's the thing I want to leave you with: every single one of us carries both masculine and feminine energy. We move between their high and low expressions depending on what we've been through, what feels safe, and what our nervous system has learned to do in moments of vulnerability.

This isn't about becoming more feminine or shutting down your masculine. It's about recognizing which expression is active — and understanding what it needs to return to its high form.

High masculine needs to feel like the structure it provides is genuinely safe — not just controlled.

High feminine needs to feel like what it receives will be honored — not used against it.

When both of those things are true, the sap flows through the fiber. The healing moves. And the gate doesn't need to be forced open — it opens on its own, because the conditions finally feel right.
