Why Your Body Keeps the Score — Energetically
By Janell Rae · Energy Healer; Founder of the Energy Intelligence Method™
You've probably heard the phrase the body keeps the score. It comes from decades of trauma research showing that overwhelming experiences don't just live in our memories — they live in our muscles, our nervous system, our gut. But what if the score is being kept in an even deeper place than we thought?
What if trauma is stored not just in the body, but in the energy body — and that's exactly why so many people hit a wall in conventional healing?
That's the question at the heart of the Energetic Nervous System model, and it's one I've been exploring for decades in my practice.
Two Systems, One Architecture
Modern medicine has given us an extraordinary map of the human nervous system. We understand how the brain communicates with the body, how the autonomic nervous system shifts between safety and threat, and how the vagus nerve acts as the master regulator of our sense of wellbeing.
At the same time, ancient traditions — Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Japanese bodywork — have documented a parallel system: the meridian network, through which life force (qi) flows throughout the body.
These two systems have largely been treated as separate. Conventional medicine on one side. Energy medicine on the other hand.
But what my clinical observations over many years consistently show is that this separation is artificial — and costly.
Clients presenting with chronic nervous system dysregulation — anxiety, freeze responses, shutdown — almost always show energetic blockages in the corresponding meridian territories. Clients whose gut function has been disrupted by unprocessed emotional experience show simultaneous energetic stagnation in the central core.
And most importantly: interventions that address the energy body produce measurable changes in nervous system tone, emotional regulation, and physical function.
This isn't a coincidence. It's architecture.
The Structural Parallel That Changes Everything
When you place the nervous system and the meridian system side by side, something remarkable emerges.
Both systems organize around a central axis — the brain and spinal cord on the biological side; the governing vessel and conception vessel on the energetic side — and branch outward into the limbs and periphery.
Both systems communicate information about safety and threat. Both respond to emotional experience and alter function accordingly. Both encode the imprints of overwhelming events.
Research is beginning to catch up with what energy practitioners have long observed. Studies by Helene Langevin and colleagues have documented that meridian pathways correspond closely to the body's fascial planes — the continuous web of connective tissue that envelops every structure in the body. This fascial network conducts electrical signals and responds to both mechanical and emotional input.
The fascial network may be the physical medium through which what Eastern traditions call meridian flow actually travels — a body-wide communication system that is continuous with, but not reducible to, the nervous system alone.
This is why bodywork, acupuncture, and energy healing can produce neurological effects that extend far beyond the site of intervention. They are speaking to a system that is connected everywhere.
What This Means for Healing
When trauma occurs, both systems encode the experience simultaneously. The nervous system stores it as implicit memory — sensory, somatic, emotional fragments that live outside conscious recall but shape perception and physiology. And the energy body stores it as a contraction in the corresponding meridian territory: a frozen pattern that persists long after the moment of overwhelm has passed.
This is what I call a neuroenergetic imprint.
The clinical reality of these imprints is this: they are self-sustaining. The nervous system's chronic activation maintains the energetic constriction. The energetic constriction maintains the organ dysfunction. The organ dysfunction feeds altered biochemistry back to the brain, which interprets it through the original threat lens.
The loop is sealed.
This is why purely cognitive approaches — talk therapy, mindset work, even insight — often produce only partial relief. They can change the story the mind tells. But they cannot discharge the somatic activation stored in the nervous system, and they cannot release the energetic contraction held in the meridian field.
Both must be addressed for the loop to fully resolve.
The Path to Complete Healing
Understanding the Energetic Nervous System as a unified architecture — not two separate systems, but two dimensions of one integrated whole — changes what complete healing looks like.
It means addressing the imprint where it actually lives: in the nervous system and the energy field and the gut and the identity layer where the core conclusion of the original experience was formed.
In my practice, I see this repeatedly: clients who have been in therapy for years, who have worked hard on their mindset, who eat well and exercise — and who still feel stuck in ways they can't explain. When we address the energetic dimension of their imprints, the results ripple. Anxiety decreases. Sleep improves. Physical symptoms remit. Relationship patterns shift.
Not because energy work is magic. But because the imprint was never only in the mind. It was always simultaneously in the nervous system, the energy field, the gut, and the identity.
Healing it requires working in all those territories at once.
The Energetic Nervous System isn't a metaphor. It's the architecture of human healing — and once you understand it, you can never look at your symptoms, your patterns, or your healing journey the same way again.

Ready to explore what’s at the root of your pattern?
The Energy Intelligence Method™ is a dual-system approach that works with both the nervous system and the energy body to release what other approaches haven’t been able to reach. If you’re ready to stop managing the pattern and start resolving it, I’d love to connect.
