Why Certain People Get Under Your Skin

(And Others Don’t)

On mirrors, misalignment, and learning to read what a difficult person is actually here to show you.

For a long time, I believed what most people believe. If someone upset me, it was because of what they had done. They criticized me, or dismissed me, or simply walked into a room and somehow the whole afternoon tilted. The feeling was theirs to answer for, and my job was to change them, avoid them, or grit my teeth and get through it.

And there is real truth in part of that. Some people are genuinely unwell. Some relationships are harmful, and no amount of insight makes staying in them wise. I want to say that plainly before I say anything else, because nothing that follows is an argument for tolerating mistreatment.

But over the years — sitting with people, watching the same scenes play out from a hundred different chairs — I started noticing something that didn’t fit the story I’d been handed.

Two people could meet the exact same person and walk away with completely different wounds. Or with no wound at all. One employee found the boss intimidating; another found that same boss steadying, even inspiring. One sibling carried thirty years of resentment; another sat across from the very same brother in something like peace. If the other person were the whole cause — if they were simply the problem — that couldn’t happen. The same cause would leave the same mark on everyone.

So something else was going on. Something happening inside us, not only to us.

That was the loose thread. And when I finally pulled on it, it unraveled almost everything I thought I knew about difficult people — and slowly rewove it into something far more freeing. Because the real question, I’ve come to believe, was never why is this person like this? It was quieter than that, and far more useful: what is this moment trying to show me?

Not every reaction means the same thing

The first thing I had to learn was that not every uncomfortable reaction means the same thing.

Sometimes another person is a mirror. Without meaning to, without the faintest idea they’re doing it, they reveal something in me that’s ready to be seen. And sometimes a person simply isn’t in alignment with who I am — and the discomfort isn’t asking me to change at all. It’s only showing me what fits me and what doesn’t.

One asks you to heal. The other asks you to honor yourself.

Confuse the two, and you’ll spend years trying to heal something that was never broken — or brushing past something that was quietly asking for your attention. Learning to tell them apart has been one of the most freeing things in my life.
